Papcio Chmiel was born in 1923. During the World War II he served in the Home Army and then in the Polish Army. In 1947 he started to work for "Swiat Przygod" magazine, in which he published his first comic - ending of "Sierzant King z Krolewskiej Konnej" ("Sergeant King from the Royal Mounted"). In 1949 "Swiat Przygod" and "Na tropie" united and "Swiat Mlodych" was created. Papcio Chmiel was working there until he retired. In 1956 he drew a comic in ten parts about a testing monkey sent in the space. The story did not appeared for a long time - until the first sputnic was sent in the space, when for lack of other possibilities "Romek i A'Tomek" was published.
The first book about their adventures was edited in 1966. Until today 24 tomes of "Tytus, Romek i A'Tomek" came out (the first three were redrawn completely new), with the total edition of ten million copies.
