"Kapitan Zbik" is the most numerous comic series amongst Polish comics - consists of 53 parts. The idea of it was given by Zbigniew Gabinski.
They were drawn by Zbigniew Sobala, Jan Rocki, Grzegorz Rosinski, Mieczyslaw Wisniewski, Boguslaw Polch, Andrzej Kaminski and Jerzy Wroblewski - the best and most famous Polish drawers polish up their skills drawing "Kapitan Zbik". Unfortunately the names of scenarists are unknown. In the Main Headquarters of Militia were thrown comic scenario open to internal competition. Thanks to Mr. Adam Rusek from the National Library I get to know the names of the scenarists of the comic (see table below the text). Amongst them journalists, writers (Anna Kolodzienska - authoress of detective stories). Most of them however were created by Mr. Wladyslaw Krupka.
Captain Zbik fought with murders, roberries, smuggling, hooliganism, poaching and even with espionage. The policeman knew judo, Morse code, he was a great diver, shooter and skier. If we omit noticeable propaganda elements, we would get quite good criminal comic. Often letters from captain Zbik to readers were published, in which he wrote about alcoholism, duds, homeless dogs, swearwords, etc. He also warned of dangers, advised how to get bicycle card, encouraged to collect recycling paper, etc. Sometimes he recalled his life. If captain Jan Zbik was a fictitious hero we get to know really a lot about him from his letters. He was born in 1937. After World War II he lived with his parents in a small village near Zielona Gora. In 1960 he graduated from The Military Academy in Szczytno and for some time he worked in a small town in his home parts. Later he was moved to Police Headquarters in Warsaw. Captain's friends wrote to him thousands of letters. They wrote about their problems, poaching neighbours, complained about their older colleagues. Few times Zbik described requirements for candidates for military academies at readers' requests. In the last part of "colored books" captain Jan Zbik said goodbye to his young friends and explained that his superiors decided to transfer him to another position. "Captain Zbik" series had appeared for 15 years since 1967 till 1982. In this period 79 books appeared (including reprints). The total edition of all parts amounts to 11,330,000 copies exactly. Rock band Big Cyc recorded a song about the brave captain, it is on their first tape. |
